Maintaining Healthy Hair and Scalp : Expert Tips from Michelle Marshall Salon

Stylist Megan Shares Her Top Tips for Healthy Hair

Megan Michelle Marshall Salons Carfiff

I’m a stylist at Michelle Marshall salon and I love all things colouring and cutting. I also love to learn all about hair condition and how to keep it strong and healthy. We are a Redken salon, which is an educational brand that caters to all hair types and conditions. Redken takes a scientific approach when formulating its products and uses the power of protein, moisture, and acidic PH of the hair. This makes a massive impact on how we can help combat common hair issues.

There are many different issues we deal with daily in the salon from unmanageable frizz, itchy scalp, split ends, and breakage. There are various reasons why our hair can feel dry, limp, and frizzy. These are my tips on how to maintain healthy hair & scalp and how to prevent these common issues from happening.

Combatting Frizzy Hair

When our hair is frizzy it could be down to our hair type, heat or even the products we use. My first hot tip is knowing what products to use and how to use them on your hair. Frizzy hair typically needs more moisture to smooth frizz, but products such as shampoo, conditioner, and masks can build up on the scalp or be too harsh which can weigh down the hair causing it to feel limp. Ensure you’re using a lightweight cleansing shampoo recommended by your stylist for your first shampoo, and then follow with your moisturising shampoo, treatment and conditioner/mask. We would generally recommend Redken’s amino mint & frizz dismiss range, this will help to cleanse, moisturise and tame frizz.

Leave-in treatments are the most effective way to keep the hair smooth and minimise frizz throughout the day. Always remember to use heat protection before using heated tools! Satin pillowcases have many benefits for frizzy hair also.

Addressing Itchy Scalp

Itchy scalp is another common issue within the salon. Again, there are a lot of reasons why our scalp becomes itchy and dry but there is a recurring explanation. Product build-up on our scalp is something that isn’t spoken about a lot. Once we have a build-up,  it becomes hard for products to work effectively. Build-up can be caused by products such as shampoos, conditioners, masks and oils that contain harsh ingredients or silicones.

My hot tip to avoid an itchy, flaky scalp is to use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to remove product build-up. I would recommend Redken hair cleansing cream or amino mint. Using the correct products is the secret to a clean & healthy scalp! So making sure to do your research on products is vital for optimal hair and scalp health.

Preventing Split Ends

Split ends are one of our most common issues, often accompanied by breakage or dry hair. Split ends are caused by excessive heat tools and chemical services. Although there isn’t a way to completely repair split ends once the hair has been broken, there are ways to prevent and minimise the appearance of split ends.

My hot tip to combat split ends is adding protein & moisture-based products to your hair. I would recommend Redken Extreme Lengths range. This range contains biotin which promotes hair growth and soy protein to help strengthen and hydrate the hair whilst minimising the appearance of split ends. Leave-in treatments also make a big difference in our hair condition and provide healthy shiny shiny-looking hair throughout the day. Regular treatments such as the Redken acidic bonding concentrate and regular cuts will also help with this.

Caution with Social Media Trends

Another big issue we see in salons that contributes to hair damage are trends we see on social media, such as TikTok. We are so easily led by trends but it might be damaging your hair! Let’s talk about some of the issues I’ve seen from trends.

Permanent Straightening and Perfume on Straighteners: These techniques can melt the hair cuticle, causing severe damage. Opt for professional keratin treatments recommended by your stylist.

DIY Masks and Over-Oiling: Using ingredients like olive oil, mayo, rice water, eggs, lemon juice, or toothpaste can cause buildup, breakage, and dandruff. Stick to professional treatments like Redken’s Extreme Lengths Leave-In Treatment for overnight care.

Heatless Curls: While reducing heat is beneficial, leaving hair damp or wet overnight can weaken hair, causing frizz and breakage. Ensure your hair is relatively dry and use a leave-in treatment to protect hair integrity.

By following these expert tips and using the right products, you can maintain strong, healthy hair and scalp, preventing common issues from occurring. At Michelle Marshall Salons, we are committed to providing the best care for your hair, ensuring it looks and feels fabulous every single day.
